Celiac Awareness Day is officially today. With so many people eating gluten-free for various reasons, it’s important to know that a disease exists where a gluten-free diet is the only cure: Celiac Disease. A few important stats to share with people who may suspect they have Celiac Disease:
- 1 in 133 Americans has Celiac Disease
- 83 percent of those who have Celiac Disease do not know that they have it—they are either not diagnosed, or misdiagnosed with something else!
- It takes 6 to 10 years for the average Celiac to be diagnosed.
- A gluten free diet is the only treatment for Celiacs.
Do you know if you have Celiac disease? Or do you suspect a friend or family member has it? Send them this quiz from the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness.
If you are Celiac, it can be difficult to find the support you need to eat out at restaurants. Check out Alex’s Gluten Free Spots, our app that helps Celiacs find and rate restaurants for their gluten free menu offerings and staff knowledge of preparing food gluten free.
